Rebecca RatcliffeBecks / Fire & TheftDate Of Birth : 7/3/72 Discography : View all tracks
Rebecca Ratcliffe is the singer sister of Matt Carlton. She started acting lessons when she was thirteen, singing lessons at sixteen and by eighteen continued to train in Performing Arts at The Musical Theatre College.
Brother Matt had started his career as a producer when Becky was just twelve, so it seemed second nature to her, especially as he would knab her for the occasional backing vocal for his own material! In 1995, Becky released her first official dance track and went on to perform vocals for Ham, Demo and Justin Time on "Here I Am", DNA & Justin Time"s "Touch My Heart", her own "Dynamite" and "Swallow The Light", Helix anthem "U R Everything" with Marlon and Fire and Theft tracks "No Conference", "Game 9" and "Essential Philosophy". Becky says, "Fire and Theft is up my street, I absolutely adore Portishead, Radiohead and Ruby Lyrically, but I've always loved Barbara Streisand as well!" Becky has a clear, European sounding voice which has stood her in good stead for the Hardcore scene. The last vocal she did was for Slipmatt and Frisky, on a track called "Take Care of You", which awaits future release. She has also done some House, but she feels her most vocally experimental phase was with Fire & Theft. Becky says, "I listen to a lot of guitar bands, the aforementioned Radiohead, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Dandy Warhols, Smashing Pumpkins, Silverchair, Sparklehorse, Pavement, blah, blah, blah. On the electronic side, I tend to listen to The Sneakerpimps, Morcheeba, Bjork, Kinder & Dorfmeister, Lamb and Spiritualist, but at the end of the day, it's mostly all downbeat stuff". For the future, Becky's main ambition is to get acting work in television and to spend at least a year travelling around the world. She also says she would like to find a new band to front, so any budding bands out there know what to do. "I don't really know the Hardcore scene anymore, but during 1991 - 1994 I loved the safety of it all - dancing and chatting all night and no-one ever judged you. It was a real party atmosphere. Mind you, it was always run really unprofessionally"! And not much has changed there Becks! Samuel Barber - Adagio For Strings |
